Tickets for the Reading and Leeds Festivals have sold out in record time with 200,000 being sold within 24 hours of going on sale.

The tickets went on sale at 19:00 BST on March 31st and sold in just a couple of hours.

Rage Against the Machine, Metallica and the Killers will headline the event in August.

Melvyn Benn, head of organisers Festival Republic, said: "I am over the moon. Absolutely thrilled. [It's the] 20th year since we took over Reading after it had been bankrupt. [And the] tenth year since we created Leeds.

"The UK's biggest-selling festival with the best bill on the planet this year sells out in less than two hours. Whoever is talking about a slump in festival popularity is talking rubbish."

Rage Against the Machine will play their only UK festival performance of the year at Reading on Friday August 22nd and at Leeds the day after.

Metallica will play Leeds on the 22nd and Reading on Sunday 24th, while the Killers will headline the bill at Reading on Saturday and Leeds on Sunday.

The Killers will be joined by the Raconteurs, Editors, We Are Scientists, Dirty Pretty Things and the Subways on their performance schedule.
